Tanya Dernaika, the Head of Strategic Planning in Memac Ogilvy Dubai, was more than happy to greet and speak to ZU Dubai students. She was very pleased to share the achievements of the group and the company in general with the students.
Ms. Dernaika talked about the company’s real asset, which is its employees. She explained that “the quality of our people” is what concerns the company the most and makes it successful. She also expressed how important it is to have passion for what you are doing, after all advertising is a way communication, and you have to want to be passionate about it in order to be proficient in it.
Ms. Dernaika also pointed out an important observation, which is that people older than 30 years old struggle in this environment because it requires them to acknowledge the role of new media and what technology can achieve when it comes to advertising. It was interesting to hear that point being made as she continued to say that “you (ZU students) are born with this; you are used to it”, but people who are older have to cope with the changing face of media and have to use newer tools to keep up with the target audience.
Ms. Dernaika also gave a brief of the company’s history and the man behind the thriving company, David Ogilvy; quoting him several times and referring to his ideas when explaining what the company’s vision is. Ms. Dernaika has worked with Memac Ogilvy since 1992 and has been a fundamental asset to the company since then.
The office in Dubai has two departments, one is the magic department, where all the creativity comes from; and the other is the logic department, where all the thinking and brainstorming happens.
