Mira AlMuhairi revealed the secrets of her experience as a renowned TV anchorwoman and shared tips with Zayed University Dubai students on how to be successful Emirati TV presenters without having to give up any of their values and traditions on her first visit to ZU Dubai campus.
Ms. AlMuhairi, surprisingly, did not plan to be a TV presenter. she never liked the idea of being in front of the camera as it was a bad thing from a cultural point of view. Her big break came when the Master of Ceremony of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders event could not make, and she was assigned to replace her. Hussain Lootah, who was the manager of Dubai TV at the time, was fascinated and finally convinced her to be a presenter after several failing attempts.
Ms. AlMuhairi said it was hard trying to fight the idea of becoming a TV presenter as it used to be such an issue to see a woman on TV, nonetheless famous.
Her advice to ZU students was on how to be good speakers of formal Arabic, stating that “listening to the recitation of the Holy Quran helped me become well-skilled in the pronunciation of my Arabic language”. She also shared another tip on the importance of controlling the voice; knowing when to lower and raise it when suitable. She also mentioned that it is important to master the “White Language”, which refers to speaking the slang Arabic but with more grace. It was sometimes hard for her is to separate feelings when trying to report distressing news.
Ms. AlMuhairi also spoke about the pros and cons of being famous, as according to her, it is sometimes “annoying when you are sick in the hospital and people approach me to ask if I am Mira”, “sometimes older people approach me to thank me for doing what I do, and that makes me feel humble”.
Ms. AlMuhairi expressed the importance of women’s presence in the media as there aren’t many, and said that it is important to represent your country with your values and traditions.
